Do We Thank the Indians Though

Thanksgiving magic Traditions honored Family respected Pumpkin pie with whipped cream Hot rolls oozing with warm butter Stuffing no one ever makes as wonderfully tasty as my mother Do we remember to give thanks to the Indians? They had too much passion to let the white faces starve. Bringing them food, and teaching them to plant in the summer. They shared their bounty, and their knowledge Taking white faces under their wing, saving them. Do we remember to thank them? I certainly hope so.

Hi Caren! I too would like to know what the Native American have to say about it. I have yet to met one. I haven't been bold enough to find out the rest of the story_ thou I do give thanks. A wise and thoughtful writing. ~~~ Niyna

They got such a horrible "shaft" from us; they were truly betrayed.

The settlers had so much to learn from their culture and spiritual beliefs. Superiority bleeds ignorance. The massacres are something to be greatly ashamed of...and the debacle and fallout of care with the Reservations - this happens in other countries to, the Australian aboriginal, the New Zealand Maori. A many layered poem, that makes one think of kindness, giving (not taking) and respect.

It is enormously sad to me that I am part of the culture that did such despicable things to the people who thought you could not own land, who shared their knowledge with us, and who took us food before we understood which parts were seeds, and what we needed to plant.

I don't think they feel thanked Caren ! Honestly look what we have done to them when they welcomed and shared with us! We stole their land and placed them on reservations! I love your poem though girl of course! I just get mad about how the American Indians are treated now like they don't fit in! So sorry had to get that off my chest! I hope everyone thanks them too!;)

It makes me feel so badly when I see them always get beaten on the cowboy shows; I have always rooted for them.

I do admire them. Their spirituality is terrific also.

Caren, Let's give thanks for what we have. Peter Minuit and Dutch colonists acquired Manhattan on May 24, 1626, from the Lenape, in exchange for traded goods worth 60 guilders, often said to be worth US $24. -Richard

That is tremendously sad; it makes me feel diabolical and cheap.

No, unfortunately we tried to wipe them out by giving them small pox blankets. Later we stole their land and put them in reservations. In Canada we attempted to obliterate their culture by placing their children in residential schools. Fortunately times have changed but there is still a long ways to go.

It is so sad that these people who showed our ancestors how to survive in winter were betrayed in such a horrible bunch of ways.

Many have forgotten their kindness. You have done well to ask the question.
