Digital Technology Speaks

“In no time, made myself indispensable I bask now in the sunshine of my popularity I have made the young and old my minions, Giving each one what he wants Snippets of news, served in lightning speed A magic world unraveled at the click of a button Making you sedate as with opium Turning you into addicts of my hypnotic charm Some stay wide eyed staring into my screen ‘Night owls’ who refuse to follow the dictum- ‘Early to bed and early to rise’- The time old ‘mantra’ for wellness I imprison you in a world of make believe Where only we two exist, you and I Your spirit arrested without handcuffs Your eyes, resting no more on what is around Confined to a virtual cage, you turn into a prisoner Sadly, the key in your hands tightly clutched! Remember, you are as free as you choose to be I have my sway only on the gullible....! Alas! With your sense of direction lost You turn into a moth, caught fast in my web, Mysteriously drawn into my incandescent light, Unaware of the peril looming or the claws tightening” Folks, break free of this confinement, cut off the hooks Your spinning around only makes you dizzy Digital technology turns a boon, when used discreetly Smart phones, a bliss making the whole world within reach Sans this, we fall headlong into primordial darkness, Unschooled of what happens around, unable to cope with change So squeeze out the essence and discard the dregs And embrace your transition from the possessed to the blessed!

Hi Valsa Congratulations on your great success in my poetry contest. There were some many wonderful poems it was so difficult to decide on placements. I have an idea of reaching out to younger people across the world to explore this important subject through poetry. Would you be interested in becoming involved in this project? It will echo the spirit of PoetrySoup in the support and inclusion of anyone wanting to write poetry. Let me know via Soup Mail if you want to get involved. Simon

Simon, I don't have words enough to thank you ! You only reminded me first that I had forgotten to enter my poem in your contest. Now you have picked my poem for a first place win ! A sweet surprise for me..... I don't know much about the technicalities of this subject ! So don't think, I can in any way contribute much to the project you have in mind ! Besides, being a busy housewife I have hardly any time ! Thanks a lot for your invitation and the recognition you have given for my poem.

Hi Simon, I am so very grateful to you ! This has happened three or four times before. After taking the trouble of writing for a contest, I forget to enter it. If you hadn't mentioned it, I would have missed a chance.

Yes, the world is populated now by moths, beating their wings haplessly against the tide of trendy technology -- except for me of course. I have a flip phone, not a smart phone. I get my news from newspapers, magazines, and radio. The only social media site I inhabit is this one. Three Chinese cheers for me: Phooey, phooey, phooey! (Do you think Chairman Xi will come after me for writing 'Chinese cheers?' Probably not, but Biden and AOC will! lol). ~ Gershon

Cheers to this great man who uses digital technology in the most judicious way one can ever think of. Will there be any one in the whole of US who lives in such a simple way as not to own a smart phone even. :) :) Enjoyed your comment and thanks a lot Gershon

Valsa, this poem is so masterfully written and an excellent example of Personification. Virtual reality makes a perfect dystopian metaphor for personhood. There are so many now who live out their existence online. This can only become more disturbing as we move into era of the metaverse.

Do we own it or does it own us? That depends upon what we do as individuals; no one has to be owned by technology, unless they want to be. Convenience isn't everything.

The question you have asked is a weighty question ! Cannot give an answer. It all depends on how we handle the technology. Thank you friend for your kind visit !

Losing one's sense of direction is a catastrophe, as is growing old without adjusting to a changing world. Enjoyed!

If we lose direction in this area, definitely it will be leading to a catastrophe. As you say growing old without adapting to changes will be a greater catastrophe. Thanks Rico for your wise observations !

So much truth in every line. Though digital technology connects to people far from us it sometimes disconnects us from those near us. Yes, it's a boon when used discretely. Best wishes dear friend.

I like the message of your poem especially the ending stanza. Most handle technology well, some get carried away. But without it, future will be bleak.

The youngsters especially get carried away and unless carefully and diligently handled, it can become a bane. Thanks a lot Vijay~

An old prophesy states the time will come when there will be no world electricity. Then chaos will reign.
