Author's Notes: "Destiny and Fate," is a Heroic Couplet I wrote and set in Iambic Pentameter. This is a highly allegorical write expressed with obvious symbolism as I seek to explain the nuances that distinguish both destiny and fate, which are historical themes that captivate each and every one of us certainly in today's world as part of our progressive human experience. I found over the years that people, at times, can confuse the essential difference that separates fate from destiny and vice versa, and in their respective places of occurrence on the human time continuum. The essential distinction between both of these themes is a matter of looking forward and looking back. "Fate" is the force that predetermines events and their development; hence, it concerns how the future will be ultimately shaped. Conversely, "Destiny" is oriented toward events that have already occurred and have a pronounced sense of inevitability on them. I believe that you will find this particular Heroic Couplet of definite interest. Enjoy!! (Gary Bateman - November 1, 2015) (Heroic Couplet)

Destiny and Fate Fate is that noble force in future time; Destiny’s look asks why and how in kind. Destiny bespeaks the past as prologue, As Fate shapes desire—leaving us agog! Both give us a special import to reach, And a rendezvous with what both can teach. Destiny’s past is now motion frozen, As we await Fate’s events as chosen. Destiny and Fate walk with us in hand, As our lives pass hourly like grains of sand. Each differ by nuance of certain time; Poets can muse past and future in rhyme. Destiny and fate form life’s mosaic, As we each seek life’s joy and not heartache! Gary Bateman, Copyright © All Rights Reserved, November 1, 2015 (Heroic Couplet)

Hello Elis, Thanks so much for you wonderful and most observant comments here. I've put a number of these Heroic Couplet writes together before. The "IP" requirement makes this style more challenging, but the end result with the syncopation of the verses is magnificent!! Thanks for the 7+!! I'll try to drop by to check your poems in the near future. Best Always, Gary

Hello Dear One "D" -- As always, thanks for your most wonderful comments!! And certainly for the 7+FAV!! I normally write my Heroic Couplets in a group of seven couplets (or 14 verses), to mirror somewhat style-wise the length and Iambic Pentameter requirements expected in the traditional Shakespearean Sonnet. This format, I find because of the meter limitations, makes the poet really focus specifically on his or her chosen theme. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge in crafting these types of writes. Continued best wishes from Ingrid and me!! "G"

Thanks Tim!! I've put a number of these Heroic Couplets together. They are a challenge with the precise "IP" requirements, but make for some great focused writes. Thanks for the "7"!! Cheers and Best, Gary

Thanks Dear Anne-Lise, These Heroic Couplets are challenging to put together to get the meter requirement just right. But they do make for a very beautiful thematic write. I'm glad you enjoyed this one!! Cheers and Best!! Gary
