Author's Notes: "Destiny and Fate," is a Heroic Couplet I wrote and set in Iambic Pentameter. This is a highly allegorical write expressed with obvious symbolism as I seek to explain the nuances that distinguish both destiny and fate, which are historical themes that captivate each and every one of us certainly in today's world as part of our progressive human experience. I found over the years that people, at times, can confuse the essential difference that separates fate from destiny and vice versa, and in their respective places of occurrence on the human time continuum. The essential distinction between both of these themes is a matter of looking forward and looking back. "Fate" is the force that predetermines events and their development; hence, it concerns how the future will be ultimately shaped. Conversely, "Destiny" is oriented toward events that have already occurred and have a pronounced sense of inevitability on them. I believe that you will find this particular Heroic Couplet of definite interest. Enjoy!! (Gary Bateman - November 1, 2015) (Heroic Couplet)

Destiny and Fate
Fate is that noble force in future time;
Destiny’s look asks why and how in kind.
Destiny bespeaks the past as prologue,
As Fate shapes desire—leaving us agog!
Both give us a special import to reach,
And a rendezvous with what both can teach.
Destiny’s past is now motion frozen,
As we await Fate’s events as chosen.
Destiny and Fate walk with us in hand,
As our lives pass hourly like grains of sand.
Each differ by nuance of certain time;
Poets can muse past and future in rhyme.
Destiny and fate form life’s mosaic,
As we each seek life’s joy and not heartache!
