DENG XIAOPING

Deng—
I first heard your name
as I crossed China,
a nation rising
on the bones of its past.

They whispered
that you were the architect—
the quiet mind
that rebuilt an empire
without raising your voice.

You broke the chains
of old doctrine,
yet honoured its roots.
You opened the gates,
but never surrendered the house.

“Socialism with Chinese Characteristics”—
your subtle genius,
your silent revolution.
A path
where ideology bowed
to practicality,
and millions
rose from dust.

Mao built the throne.
But you, Deng—
you built the future
that sits upon it.

You welcomed the world
without kneeling to it.
You invited capital
but not chaos.
You opened markets
yet guarded the soul
of your people.

This is leadership—
not noise,
but consequence.
Not pride,
but purpose.

Today you are gone,
but China
still speaks your name
in its factories,
its bridges,
its soaring cities,
its unbroken will.

Some leaders rule.
A few transform.
And fewer still
become the breath
of a nation.

Deng Xiaoping—
your footsteps
remain louder
than your voice.
