Definition
Once a little girl asked me:
„What is depression?",
„You know, little girl, that's a really good question."
My tongue was tied in a knot,
Not knowing what to say,
Knowing my next words,
Would cause her smile to fade away.
I wanted to say that it's just being sad,
Yet somehow I couldn't let it out,
'Cause deep down in my heart I knew,
That's not what it's about.
I could've said "It's just a phase",
But man... do I hate that phrase.
Depression is never choosing life over death,
It's hoping that every time you exhale,
It will be your last breath.
It's hoping that someone listens,
even though you have no voice,
It's getting told to get over it,
as if you're suffering by choice.
It's people accusing you of just being mean,
It's parents always blaming it on the fact that you're a teen.
It's hitting rock bottom with no hand to hold,
It's feeling so empty,
A smile equals the worth of gold.
Finding out what it is,
Is definitely a mission,
'Cause like many other things,
Depression has no definition.
And if you ever want to find it out,
Then please, do try,
When you have an answer come see me,
If I'm not there,
Look up at the sky.
