Dear Poetry

The room withheld its breath. The page kept listening.
The door forgot its knock. Ink waited in the margins.
Secrets filled the cupboards. The ink learned all their names.
Each silence asked a question. Each line refused one answer.

Rain gathered on the windows. The paper blurred its edges.
The house forgot its posture. A comma held the sentence.
A laugh escaped the rafters. A full stop missed its cue.
The sorrow changed its coat. The page refused to choose.

Strangers crossed the afternoon. The ink began to listen.
Each carried half a story. The page supplied a shadow.
Their silences held chapters. The margins turned the pages.
The story lost its ending. The page left it unwritten.

Evening emptied the room. The page kept one chair open.
The walls released their shadows. Ink settled into silence.
No footstep crossed the threshold. The margins made a doorway.
The room remembered its breath. The poem remained awake.

Surprisingly not .... I had set up the ideas of what I would want to say to poetry and its responses came easily. The hardest was getting the two ideas to marry across.

Alice, a very interesting form, I followed your directions & its always nice to try new things. It unfolds so well with mystery & wordplay you do so well, "A laugh escaped the rafters, A full stop missed its cue." whimsical , I was held captive wanting more of a conclusion. As if it were the pages stream of consciousness. 📖 Wow, compelling! I🩵 your work!

Thank you Anaya .... I started with all the reasons poetry has been my one true friend. Then decided to see how my reactions to things are echoed by my poetry. It is the quiet friend who listens without trying to change me. It doesn't complete my thoughts it challenges me to find more. When I just need quiet its there sitting quietly with me. It encourages without telling.

Alison. Your poem is so good. There is so much going on; I find it fascinating. I can clearly see that the ink, writing a story, is reacting simultaneously to the house (life going on around it). At evening, there is a pause, but not an ending, leaving the feeling that it will all be resumed (contnued) later. Anyway, that's how I see it. I loved reading this. I'm going to fav it so I can enjoy it often. Your friend in poetry, Jan.
