Notes About The Poem

Dear Poetry

Dear Poetry,

Wait! I AM poetry.
So, let's make that, "Dear Poet".

Dear Poet,
Why do you write me?

Or, should I say, "Why DID you write me?"

After all, I'm already being read by my audience.

Isn't that right, reader?

I wrote you, dear poetry,
to express whatever crazy thought or feeling
was in my brain or heart,
giving it a chance to escape
that bat house or that broken down heap,
knowing that no one has to listen,
as the reader
(if you can believe it)
is reading you voluntarily!

...and, by the time you are being read, dear poetry,
I, the poet, am long gone,
and the person with egg on their face,
(i.e., the "poetry")
is you!

Sincerely,
the Poet (er, the Poetry, er, oh, for heaven's sake!)

We may all have a poem inside us, but no one tells it with humour like you, David. Congratulations on your Fist Placement

Haha, thanks Pascal! You are making me laugh, too, because I think your comment has a typo. It seems like something you might say to someone who punched someone in the nose! 😀😀

I think you may have just been a bit rude to poetry, I can almost see its tongue sticking out. This is wild with insults aimed at yourself, too. All that attitude makes this reader smile and the poem can only blame itself for being seen with its tongue out. Your cleverness is showing again, David. (pls revisit my poem 'yesteryears' because you aren't produce and only you can revise)

Haha, I think I have an uneasy relationship with my poetry. 😀I went back to yesteryears to comment again. 😊

Hahahaha goshhh this is seriously something unique and left me thinking! Quite hilarious lol, made my heart smile.. well, where does poetry go when the poet is nowhere to be seen.. maybe it becomes a wanderer. This is absolutely going in my faveesss 👏 💛 💫 ⭐ Such cleverness and witty nature you've shown here! Keep shining and writing! Yessss! Sending you starlight and best wishes, David! 💎 🌙

haha, you have a good idea, maybe a poem becomes a wanderer, going all over the word and having a conversation with a lot of people. If it's a good enough poem, the kind I never write - lol, it can have a longer life than the poet.

Vintage David Crandall. You are an 'umble fellow,' as Uriah Heep said about himself in 'David Copperfield.' (Boy, dropping literary references is about as snotty a thing one can do. But there I go, doing it all too regularly). ~ Not-so-'Umble'

If I'm humble, it may be because I had two older brothers who carefully instilled in me the principal that I'm an incompetent idiot that can do anything right.

Thanks, Gershon! That's OK, I like Dickins, and by Dickins, I mean old 30s and 40s British movies based on his books. I've only read all of The Christmas Carols. But I've seen a lot of old those black and whites. I've seen David Copperfield, but I don't remember it very well, as there's not a heck of a lot I do remember well. I'm thinking I should start rewatching some of those movies.
