Poem 17

from the anthology Voices From Clark Cemetery, a work in progress.

Daisy May Brown 1891-1913 Minute by minute I crawl on air, and I crawl in the dirt amidst the worms, Bracing myself strongly, Waiting for the eternal dare. Step forward dying one And listen to me, the dead one. Step forward blind dying ones, And kindly give me your eyes. I slink back here in my dusty grave, I ooze silently here in the blind gaze of Tiresias, Father Time with no voice or tongue. Minute by minute, My breathing soul rides the hard earth, Like naked Poseidon with trident for teeth. I did not have to die so young! My friends, you can close your book, But never close your mind. My friends, you can close your door and lock it, But never close your heart. Frankly, I found life to be a perplexing puzzle, A puzzle for the confounded and the confused, A maze for the noble lost. Minute by minute I rot, Fodder for the walnut trees here, Masticating monsters with fear for teeth. I crawl in the dirt here amidst the worms, I wait here, waiting for the eternal dare.
