Cruelly Changed

They knock the little buildings down,
Replacing them with towers,
For giant corporations hold
Those taking-over powers.

The neighborhood has much less sun
And character and charm,
Plus traffic and more people cause
A reason for alarm.

The restaurants and shops we knew
And had for years embraced
Are empty or with unfamiliar
Stores have been replaced.

We grow to love the place we live
But when it’s cruelly changed,
It’s natural to start to feel
A little bit estranged.

It isn't just big cities. Even hamlets have changed. I wish they could stay as they are.

Destruction in the name of progress. I remember when we bought the house in the suburbs, we couldn't even get cable because there were not enough people. Now it's surrounded houses, four lane roads and manufacturing.

I hear you loud and clear ilene….l have lived in my home for years which is one street from the beach in a suburb that used to be just a drive through coastal rural place with many old humble beach homes and very few people…..now its the place to be…..full of huge homes, cafes, marinas, shops, restaurants and much more….and loads of people. It no longer has the same feel or appeal and is always so busy. So, l relate to your well written poem my friend! Debx
