Crossing Over

It took the Israelites forty years
to finally reach the promised land.
I could well take double that time
till my long journey comes to an end.
Having trekked for endless nights and days,
faced many storms and hurdles on the way,
I would at last come to my destination.
Stopping at the bank of the river of fire,
an angel guides me, ferrying me across
to the other side, where resolutely
I walk through a shroud of thick mist.
Then, to the sound of heavenly song,
I step into the realm of Elysian Fields.

Thank you, my friend. Had a bit of drama this afternoon as I had a hard job catching a 4ft black snake which somehow made its way to my internal yard! ~ Regards // paul

Congratulations on this saga of the journeys end. Free verse with a rhythm and structure and a flow that felt like a sonnet. Amazing! I always hope the crossing over is in a twinkling in that I imagine we’ll be too tired for boats, brinks, and mist! Nice work on this.

I tend to agree with you, Edlynn….I'm sure that the crossing will be so swift that we won't have time to think about it...or record it in poetic form! Thank you for stopping by, yet again:) Regards // paul

I hope it takes more than 80 years for you to make this final journey, Paul. I love the way you described the River Styx and your arrival in Elysian Fields. Excellent narration skills are employed in this awesome poem, Paul. With many outstanding entries, judging was difficult (again). Congratulations on a second-place win! And thank you for supporting the contest. Best wishes, Carolyn
