Yellow, happy dreams gone up in argon Dancing dreams in laced clouds rained down to earth White lights which give darkness a come-on Youth's dreams, high-minded dreams what were they worth Sometimes sleep comes upon an aging body Resting in afternoon's sun-filled room Wrinkles exposed don't match the clothes shoddy Just for a rose-colored visit he said then vroom If only he could have lived up to those dreams If only he hadn't drunk the first drop His life could have been filled with rainbow streams My sun-filled room wouldn't be his last stop Crayon box dreams can become reality He passed while I made our afternoon tea

Sara, your sonnet is really poignant. Drinking can lead to early death, hurting loved ones in the process. Congratulations on your top win.

Excess drinking can lead one to his unanticipated death. If he had lived a more disciplined life, perhaps he could have realized his 'crayon box dreams'. A powerfully moving sonnet, dear Sara.

Yes, Valsa, drinking can cause an early demise destroying one's family along the way. If a person adds smoking into the mix that can totally wipe out a person's health. Thanks for the kind review. Sara K

Thank you, James for the encouraging words. My biological father was not in my life because I was put up for adoption. However, this poem is not altogether about him or me. It a little mixture of poems, short stories, and books I have read over the years. Especially a poem written by Robert Frost. Sara K

A superb sonnet my dear poet friend Sara. When I was in grade school learning at public school, I knew some classmates of mine who'd gone through difficult childhood like this because of their parent's vices. I was praying that they'll change. Thanks a lot for sharing this gem dear Sara. I'm sure this will score high. Good luck always. Hugs

Yes, Len, the pain of an upbringing in a home where there is addiction or abuse is a lifelong emotional influence on the whole family. I feel for those who have gone through such trauma. Thanks for your visit. Sara K

Dear Sara, oh this was so heavy to read, a very deeply emotional poem. “If only he hadn't drunk the first drop” brought tears in my eyes. A moving piece, very nicely penned. Best, Anne

Oh boy, a childhood ruined by an alcoholic father. How often this has played out in families! Still, he was being looked after to the very end. Powerful poem Sara

Tom, I was writing this one remembering some poems or short stories by Robert Frost. I kind of mixed up all those that I remembered plus added in the addiction part. I am glad you liked it. Also, remembering my childhood when my biological father who was an alcoholic called to come home but died before his family could get there. Sara K
