Could That We Slip Away

There will be no tomorrow
so we will hold our fate in silence
We still have precious moments
to spend in wondrous illusions
and fool our hearts...if briefly
accommodating goodbye
in a world gone mad

We will spend our last moments
    of reverent understanding
with love's purest passions, without restraint
and give thanks to the quiet breath of evening
among the fiery ashes of war

How dark and unending is cruelty
How evil the times we live in

Could that we slip away in the dark of night
and leave this nightmare of exploding thunder
that kills without mercy

For death is coming
and we will face its ruthlessness
holding tight among the dead and dying

I will reach for your fingers to grasp
and wipe away your last tear
until my last breath
I wish we could have known another time
another place

I believe the spectre of death causes us to truly live. Without it their is no vitality of urgency.

My heart and my imagination was so strongly stirred by this deep and emotional piece, Frederic. Your potent pen so tenderly depicts the finality of not having a tomorrow. I especially love your last two lines for a wistfully moving finale to this profound poem. Best wishes for a win and warmest wishes for you, dear poet and dear friend .. ~Susan
