Consumed By Expectation The lion waits; a tired and lonely beast sequestered long behind the iron gate which sternly keeps him prisoner, at least in body. But his gusty roars relate the mental blaze which leaps beyond the cage; the kindled strength and burning hope, like fire of hungry flames that wildly lick in rage, devouring viciously the dwindling pyre. He waits and hopes the iron gate will rise; the culmination of his endless dream, when agony, at last, will earn the prize he seeks. But at that moment will it seem... that strength for joy is lacking in his claim... consumed by expectation's fiery flame? Sandra M. Haight

I once heard a lion's roar and thought surely it was coming through loudspeakers. Their roar is definitely something no cage can contain. Wonderful sonnet and congrats on your placement.

Thank you, John, for your supportive comments. I had also used this as a metaphor for 'human expectation' which very often consumes the flames of hope. Sandra :)

I really enjoyed this, Sandra and, yes, thank God these beautiful beasts are kept in better surroundings, I'd prefer it if they were out where they should be, though... Congratulations, Viv x
