Confessional

"Hail Mary full of grace"
These words you demand of me
I sit in this dark box
Confessing
Crying
Talking to a shadow
Eyes that never meet
Untouched by your hand

You say my secrets are safe
I wish to be set free
Yet there is no relief
This is a cold place
A box
The walls close in
I feel no relief from sin
You ask me to begin

Forgive me father
For I have sinned
I have had impure thoughts
I have done things in the dark
The beast has left it's mark

You sit there
Do you understand
You speak softly and demand
Tell me more
Tell me more
Your secrets are safe

Why do you sit there
In the dark
Separated from me
Is it somehow easier to see
I'm sorry
It makes no sense
The wall becomes a fence

In the end we are both just men
We will sin again
Hail Mary's won't be enough
Only God can forgive our stuff
I will talk direct to Him
Through Jesus I can begin
His blood spilled for me
Now I know I am free
Redeemed
Forgiven
Jesus
Sweet Jesus
It is only him
To whom I confess
The one who paid the price
He cleared my debt

It isn't mother Mary
Or a man in a robe
Who set me free

So I walk away

Unforgiven

By man

I've finally managed to locate this one, you've posted a vast number of poems! the one in my contest dealt with child abuse within the church, whereas this one deals with the act of confession...I've always thought there is something a little creepy about the whole thing; the catholic church is full of ritual, some of it quite bizarre...you wrote this well, and I see it was a winner in drake's contest a year ago

In the old Testament when the people sinned they would have to go to the priests. The priests would sacrifice animals for the remission of the peoples sins, as well the chief priest would enter the Holy of Holies once a year to speak to God. When Christ was crucified he was the sacrifice to end all sacrifices. Also it meant we can speak directly to Jesus (who is also God) we no longer need to go through an interceder.

"Holy crap, Richard wrote this"...first thought after I finalized my contest and saw your name. The applied perspective in this piece contained such power & declaration. It is not often hearts scream this high to ones' heaven. Such a magnificent reflection of self & all around you. Congrats on your 3rd place win, Richard!

I'm not knocking your poem Rick, it's a good write for the contest and an expression of what you think. I do have one question though, something I've never understood. Without confession as u go, so to speak. What do you do, just carry the whole package along till the end? I am asking seriously. Take care, Richard

Read the lower Response first. Since the Father Son and Spirit are one talking to the Son is communicating with God and only he has the power to forgive and forgiveness can't be earned it is a gift. In scripture it states the only way to the Father is through the Son. All other paths lead away from God.

No I pray to God directly. When Christ died the curtain separating the Holy of Holies was ripped Dow the centre. Previously only the priests could enter. This symbolized Christ removing the barrier to the father. Because of his sacrifice we can speak to God through him. He is now our Holy Priest.

Great Poem Rick !! I have always held the same sentiments. Through God's Grace and Jesus' blood we are free to have direct access to our Savior-- the difference between O/T and N/T. Good luck for the competition.
