Come Visit Chicago

     Visit beautiful Michigan Avenue
        The ‘Magnificent Mile’
See the teenage gangs at night
         roaming ‘gangster-style’

Admire block after block on ‘the strip’
Madison Avenue, the Old West Side
burnt down by arson way back in 1968
embers still afloat – Don’t they smell great

Take a walk on the Wild Side
The South Side that once hosted Nat King Cole
Note the empty lots, broken glass and one-eyed cats
What a pleasure to take in all that…

Yes, dear friends, a trip to Chicago’s just the thing
Come to a town where crime is king

Apparently, my first home (from birth to sixteen) where the door key literally hung on a string inside the letter box (even though the door was rarely locked) now has iron grills at all windows and doors… they call it progress… and it’s coming to a town near you. Love the write, GW… can almost see it… glad that’s ‘almost’.

Major cities in America share the same wallpaper, I avoid them with every avoiding mechanism I possess. Your poem reinforces my stance. I worked in DC for many years, beginning at age 18, and that either closed or opened my eyes, I'm not sure which. Take care Mr. Depth ... CayCay

how sad! I frequented Chicago int he 70s and 80s...I remember feeling safe downtown, even at night. The city was beautiful. Need I say more?

Wow...not like it used to be - there are some lovely sites to see. Lots of history :)

Well, there still are lovely sites to see. Just keep an eye pealed for those roving gangs.

It sounds like American ethics doesn't exist in Chicago. We should at least get rid of the drugs. Better times might follow.
