Columbia 2003

COLUMBIA 2003 The seven gaze into the azure haze: In their prism-sky the heavens seem opening. All are happy, “We’re going home at last.” 40 miles to Dallas. 1000 to the Cape. But an infinite distance for these seven, Glad to see the welcoming arm of Florida : Below them the sea, and beckoning lights of home. Pouring white contrail as their souls are released, Like God’s tears streaming across the Texas sky. Man-made meteor shower, as Columbia separates itself: Like an airforce tribute, as the planes fly past and one peels off.

Terrific description of the space shuttle, Syd, as well as the astronauts' desires to get home. From the beach where I live, we chould see the space shuttle launches and you describe the contrail so well! Excellent poem, my friend. Love, Carolyn
