Cold as Ice

Why is my name blue
on your lips? You cry it to
The heavens--silence!
If I am your refrain, let
My name burn as cold as ice!

A chilling, beautifully compressed tanka. The contrast between a name “blue / on your lips” and the closing image—“burn as cold as ice”—captures the paradox of love after rupture: longing remains, but it has become piercing and remote. The silence of the heavens deepens the speaker’s sense of unanswered hurt.
