City of Gulls

Cities churn like a raging sea of gulls
Where fear becomes a broken unchained door
The mask of hunger covers every skull
Fighting for scraps tossed on a dirty floor
Buildings stand, some falling where streets collide
and garbage decays still in blinded sight
Where change is nothing, its where death abides,
to disturb hate, born by a cities plight
Children play where glass always lay shattered
and homeless snore on every darkened street
Among the crowd women whose clothes are tattered
Find life lifeless when a child's death defeats

Far from the rubble and city's broken walls
Greedy men of oath sit, toss scraps to gulls

Powerful metaphors in your sad and dark, but well-written Sonnet, Frederic. This is an excellent take on the 'saints and sinners' theme. Congratulations on your fine placement in the contest. Sandra

This is a timely sonnet, filled with the sad truths of our society. The volta at the end is so powerful !!! Well done, Frederic !!

Riveting. Had to read again. You care deeply. I feel the same way when I read this as when I read The Great Puppeteer by Wally Flint, another Soup poet. 7 and congrats, Frederic!

Oooh! This sonnet packs quite a punch, Frederick! Your description of society's ills is strikingly vivid. Then when I got to the last two lines, the hairs on my arms stood up. Nothing short of brilliant if you can give me goose bumps. (Jameis was picked by the Tampa Bay Bucs. Saw a photo of him grinning with a pile of crab legs on his table. The Bucs need help, but if he screws up in the pros he'll probably crawl back to another college.) Take care, Carolyn

jameis got the crab legs from one of the captains from deadliest catch as a thank you for helping in a charity event, he was just saying thanks, I have no problem with it..
