City of Dreams

Once upon a time in old Shanghai
The city of dreams just came alive
Every young man wanted to come
For a better life in the Shanghai sun
The place was buzzing so full of life
They came in their thousands to roll their dice
Hustle and bustle out on the street
But the true reality was hidden deep

In the city of dreams
Waiting for you
Is a dream to chase
Where dreams come true
Give up your blood
Work hard and believe
And have a new life
In the city of dreams

Well they came from China and the world around
For a taste of paradise to win their crowns
In the city of dreams there was only one rule
Only the strong would make it through
But the people never stopped to think
How a beautiful dream could somehow sink
Gangs of criminals on every street
Now the city of dreams became deadly

Bridge
They came to the Bund
In the Shanghai boom
A muddy embankment
To build a museum
Along the waterfront
From north to south
This national architecture
Stands culture proud

In the city of dreams
Waiting for you
Is a dream to chase
Where dreams come true
Give up your sweat
Work hard and believe
And have a new life
In the city of dreams

They came to work for honest money
But only a few would taste that honey
The fights were fierce when trouble brewed
These gangs would fight in a terrible feud
The opium trade had taken its toll
The dealers were bad bigger and bold
In the city of dreams you had to get tough
Temptation for money and power was such

In the city of dreams
Waiting for you
Is a dream to chase
Where dreams come true
Give up your tears
Work hard and believe
And have a new life
In the city of dreams

In the city of dreams you had to survive
So many young people turned to crime
Protecting your family came at a cost
Because in this city they could end up lost
People eventually came to terms
Wealth and prosperity had to be earned
Some people would end up in those gangs
Others would die protecting their friends

In the city of dreams
Waiting for you
Is a dream to chase
Where dreams come true
Don’t ever give up
Work hard and believe
And have a new life
In the city of dreams

WoW ! Outstanding lyrical commentary on capitalism, Kevin. You speak for all cities ~ it’s an evolutionary process of the rampant times we are living through, though the wheel is turning - we can bear. This one definitely needs music. I love how you’ve combined the beauty of culture in the bridge & how you’ve asserted that one achieves thru honest work. Blessings 4 posting.

- A fantastic lyrical poem, Kevin :) - A dream of a big and busy city is not among my dreams ... "But only a few would taste that honey" ... not always in an honest way, I would think - hugs

Thanks for sharing this... exposing your thoughts through your unique poetic style. Meanwhile, I greet you with the love of the Lord, expressed by John 3:16 of the Bible, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." God bless you.
