Choking Envy

envy germinates
in deep soil of discontent
and is quenched by acid rain

nourished by malice
its emerald suckers spread
and sap resentment's rich source

it may lie dormant
or fester in toxic thoughts
till re-kindled by desire

envy chokes the soul
ever left dissatisfied
it shall end its days alone

This is great writing, Wendy. I agree with Abdul's assessment. Envy is truly a "monster". You've done a fantastic job in this poem. I especially like the last stanza. Congratulations on your win in the contest. My best. Deb

It's a good one. Even though I wrote on Anger, I believe, Envy is the baddest dude!. It's a malady of the mind. It's easier to deal with the hardship of life than an envious mind.

I have been guilty of this one in certain situations so I'm speaking to myself as much as anyone else, Tom. Thank you for your continued encouragement.

Thank you, Jay. Poetry writing can be uplifting but also reprimands us at times!

Fester in toxic thoughts. Yes, envy does this. Nice tone Wendy.

Thank you again for your encouragement, Caren. I must research the subtle difference between 'jealousy' 'covetousness' and 'envy' though we should try to steer clear of them all!
