Chink - For the Atheist Contest

CHINK (for The Atheist contest)

A cosmic mistake produced creatures and plants
So daffodils could have just happened by chance
A silvery moon in a star spangled sky
Could have cropped up as the years passed us by

The hills and the vales and the wind in your sails
Pretty reef fishes and dolphins and whales
Snowflakes and icicles, glistening lakes
Things that just happen and nobody makes

I’m just not convinced that some bloke on a cloud
Made Presley and Bowie and (Boy) George O’Dowd
It ain’t your God planning with all of his might
Nature veers off and sometimes it’s right

You stepped from the sea with moonlight reflecting
In your ocean slicked hair and your silken wet skin
And not that my doubt nor my disbelief altered
But as you stood there in the moonlight I faltered

If perfect is ten and okay’s a seven
I look at you and I see an eleven
The tiniest chink in my atheist view
For what else explains the perfection of you

Congrats on your win Terry, and although I'm on the opposite end of the belief spectrum from you, I got a kick out of this (and I will always take a light hearted atheist over a dogmatic holy-roller anytime!). Re your ending--even the arch-atheist Nietzsche said, to paraphrase roughly: when God created woman, he made life worth living.

Sorry, somehow I missed your thoughtful reply. Yes, when you look at the incredible SCIENTIFIC odds for the Universe to exist, let alone us, it seems almost illogical for anything to exist by chance alone. But please, Terry, don't confuse faith with dogma, for real faith, belief, always is tinged by doubt-- that's why it takes guts.

Thanks L.J. (If I may be so informal). Even I scratch my head over things in nature that are seemingly inexplicable. Creatures and plants that have the most astounding symbiotic relationships that could only be the result of an absolutely cosmic coincidence... or be deliberately engineered. I guess as a believer you think you’re right... as a non believer... I hope you are. Ironic or what?

Thank, Barry. I sat with my metaphorical pen for some time before writing a word... then suddenly the ink simply flowed.
