Children of the Winter Garden

CHILDREN OF THE WINTER GARDEN Snowdrop pokes her little face Up through the winter snows; First she comes before the Crocus First she is to go. Dainty Daphne dressed in white Such fragrance spreading from her flowers; January’s child surely knows She lifts the heart through frigid hours. Red Amaryllis steals the show, Dramatic thespian we remember; Performing under many names, Takes her bows in December. Cyclamen blooms at Valentine’s Day In red or pink or white; Reminds us of our friendship ways A valentine delight. Bleeding Heart, a name so sad Doesn’t this bother you, just a tad? Valentine blossoms on a string In the woodlands rides on a swing. Winter Carolina Jasmine Stretches out upon the fence; Brightest yellow trumpet flowers - Fragrance like sweet incense. Holly wears a cape of green Bright red berries with a glossy sheen; Celebrates in the winter scene Doesn’t want to look so mean! Courageous Crocus in the cold You laugh at snow with glee; Dressed in your gown of colors bold, Such a cheerful child to see. Paper Whites coaxed to grow When calendar pages turn to December; Pure white flowers seem to glow As gifts for friends we remember.

Hi Constance, thank you! Working in our garden, tending the flowers, for me, is never work - even the weeding! I am so glad you liked this poem. Do you have a favorite flower?

Hi Evelyn, thank you for your visit. I am so glad you like this poem and I am honored by your "fave." Sometimes we forget there are brave flowers that bloom even in the cold and snow - some people too!

Hi Andrea! Thank you for your lovely message. I submitted this because flowers seem to remind us of life even in the middle of winter. In this time of worldwide chaos I was hoping this poem could be a source some happiness and whimsy.

You know your plants very well. Pity I have no sun in my small garden. So I can grow only shade plants.

Hi Victor, Thank you for your visit! Part of our garden gets very little sun. We have planted a shade garden. I love the textures and colors in it. Can you plant things like hydrangea that love the shade? They have beautiful flowers. Also my gardenia love the shady area. Stay well my friend.
