Notes About The Poem

Image result for pictures of an older woman alone at nightThis is not me, picture is from internet. I am doing okay. It has been an adjustment after having been married for 63 years plus we dated 2 1/2 years before that. I used Robert Frost's poem, "Aquainted With The Night" end rhymes to write this one.

Challenged In My Old Age

Write A Beautiful Terza Rima,
Contest sponsor: Constance La France
Date Written: 4/17/2026

I am challenged by the dark night Some nights ample tears fall like rain Now I feel I've come to the light As I traverse world's rocky lane Always I've lived by his strange beat He chose me, I cannot explain I followed pathway of his feet Sometimes, I did in my sleep cry But put on a smile in the street Now I've had to say my good-bye You have gone to a new far height Somewhere up in God's awesome sky Now I have to stand alone, right? And now challenged in the dark night

Quite touching, dear Sara. After being together so long, it is painful to be alone. But the thought that he is in a safer place should give you comfort.

Yes, Valsa, I think that he is enjoying a life I cannot have on earth and he is not having to face problems that are coming on this earth plus if it was correct that he was going to have to have his larynx removed and a permanent electrolarynx plus the feeding tube would be permanent, he would have been miserable even though still here on earth with us. God's mercy called him home, but we his family especially me as his wife are left to suffer the pain of his absence. Thank you for your compassionate comments. Sara K

Thank you, Lasaad, I know he would want me to go on and try to live my life as best as I can under the circumstances. He tried to leave me in a good shape financially, but no one can plan for that altogether because we never know what life might hold for us and everyone else as well. I appreciate the understanding and compassion. Sara K

Paula, the grief is getting better and my oldest daughter has helped me through so much of the changing things and the legal work that has been involved. Everyone has to grieve and each has to work through it on their own time which varies so much from one individual to another. Thank you for your sympathy and kind review and the congratulations. Grief can take a long time Sara, you can't just switch it off, I know he wouldn't want you to be sad though. Take care of yourself. Tom

Thank you, Tom. Yes, you are correct that grief takes its own time and each of us grieve in a different way, but we all go through the stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance plus forming a framework to work through the process. I am sort of rebounding in-between the stages right now but feel I am more settled than I have been before. Your visit, Tom, has been uplifting. Sara K

A good expression of a grieving widow, who also hold hopeful expectation in her heart. … Sometimes, I did in my sleep cry But put on a smile in the street.

Thank you, Kim, for the nice comments. It has been almost six months now and I am getting better, but the tears fall usually unexpectedly. Sara K
