Why is it said, it's raining "cats and dogs" why not, "kings and queens"

Cataract....waterfall... Thank you Gershon that sounds very likely that the expression may have come from that. I loved the idea of a light rain called "kittens and puppies" better. They would be too small to cause "A pawing of wain.... Purr-fect

So, Shirley, do you think this expression comes from the older English 'catadupe,' or perhaps from the Greek words meaning contrary to normal experience? I suppose a light rain might be 'kittens and puppies.' ~ Me-ow
