Case No 3-2-2026

consider how you harness hate when you proclaim love
passion can be congruent with damnation
blinding even the dearest souls to destructive acts
allowing the indefensible to be expressed

'in the name of love' does not offer absolution

I speak via the vantage point of the exhausted
resolve all the ill will residing beneath your skin
your song makes claims that love hurts
yet your actions irrefutably proving
it is indeed you that hurt

Congratulations on your second-place win, Laurentine, in my contest, ‘Voir Dire on Love’. Instead of sermonising, the poem interrogates the paradox: how love can mask or even justify harm. That’s a genuine philosophical exploration—your closing line, ‘it is indeed you that hurt’, could resonate universally.

We feed upon one another's energy. I enjoy reading the entries, even those that did not place for some reason or other. I feel honoured to host contests where the standard of poetry received is high. Thanks for your support.

I got pretty engrossed in the legal slant of this contest - it made it so unique as a poetry concept and was really fun to immerse in! Thank you so much for the prompts within your stanzas that initiated the thoughts and gave such choice and scope for which direction to take the poem. I'm glad it landed so well with yourself and thank you for my placement - the effort needed for your contests generally nudges me out of my comfort zone, so it's always a nice challenge. Thank you again :)

Oh my! What a soulfully moving and powerful poem on such an important subject my friend! I love what youv said here in such a profound and classy manner, such poetic elegance, which shows and gives us readers a glimpse of your morals and character too! Iv always seen you as someone who stands by truth, and i cant help but quote the lines "your song makes claims that love hurts yet your actions irrefutably proving it is indeed you that hurt" whoa! Gosh! This is a new fave for me! Pleasure readin

Woohoo thanks Ink! I was inspired for this one :) I much prefer to let people figure out the error of their ways without the lecture and just with a bit of self reflection :)

A Suzette prime nailed to the wall Miss Laurentine, what a great take on the contest prompt, and as a stand alone piece, this line is brilliant (I speak via the vantage point of the exhausted) and wow! the interpretive duality of that last line is off the scale, gotta Fave this one for sheer ingenuity, cheers David

Haha you have a skill of expression Davy lol :) thank you for your enthusiasm regarding this one. Suzette's contests take a bit of thought but I was fancying myself fully in the role of top attorney delivering a closing argument by the last line :) thank you for the generous fave - grateful :)

Thank you Jan :) the way people justify terrible things will never cease to amaze me! This was quite a complex contest rule wise but fun to do once I'd got my head round it :)
