Notes About The Poem

image from Hope at pinterest.com

The tale of Bob Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo) starts in the quaint town of Lynbrook, New York, where he was born. During World War II, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, remaining stateside. After his stint in the Marines, Keeshan ventured into the world of broadcasting. This leap would eventually lead to the germination of the beloved Captain Kangaroo. His journey from marine to captain was not just a transition in roles but a metamorphosis in purpose—going from serving his country to serving its children. From the inception to the golden years of the show, Keeshan had a vision of creating a gentle, learning-focused environment for children, showcasing his innovative approaches that changed the landscape of children’s programming. CAPTAIN KANGAROO

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A man in a vast coat-pocket universe Captain Kangaroo was what they called him first. His beard could shelter squirrels or a misplaced key; the children leaned in close—but how did Grandpa get free? Mr. Green Jeans always knew Kangaroo's pockets held sticky glue, a rogue banana peel, two lost keys, and Bunny Rabbit's unpaid fees. His mute friend Moose, that nodding sage, new chaos filled each television stage: Grandfather Clock chiming upside-down, Tom Terrific losing his paper crown. But when the Captain tipped his hat, the mess dissolved—just like that. No rhyme nor reason, a tidy end? just magic tricks, and a gentle friend.
I loved to watch him when I was little <3 It is a funny memory, concerning that show, but I remember how I despised cooked carrots, and I didn't want to eat them, I was maybe four years old at the time. My dad said, "Bunnies like carrots because they're good for your eyes! Did you ever see a bunny rabbit wearing glasses?" I told him "Yes!" He looked so confused!! Hahaha, Bunny Rabbit wore glasses, but my dad never saw Captain Kangaroo's show! :D
I loved the show, too. The world stopped when Captain Kangaroo came on. I don't think, though, my dad watched it either. He was probably reading a book instead :-)
It was much too long ago, as I was between ages of growing up, stage after stage was all anew, and therefore fleeting as islander's then were treated with Captain Honolulu, a concept no doubt by Pearl Harbor and those sources, and Kangaroo was forever replaced.
