Can We Have Our Ball Back

Almighty God, I guess you must see man as a disease
This bright blue orb that we call home must cause you much unease
No government is ever gonna listen to our pleas
Their taxes will not save us… can we have our ball back please

We drive our cars and fly in planes for holidays on skis
And now they tell us that we’ve brought our planet to its knees
We’re told that we will drown or burn though some of us will freeze
Which seems a tad dramatic… can we have our ball back please

The scientists keep saying we eat too much meat and cheese
They tell us we can all survive on lentils, beans and peas
Which won’t achieve too much because not everyone agrees
And so I have to ask you, can we have our ball back please

Another storm has ripped up houses, bridges, cars and trees
The sewers overflowed into the rivers and the seas
But now we’re in a heatwave and it’s thirty-five degrees
It’s really rather hot so can we have our ball back please

Whatever’s wrong with planet Earth is killing bugs and bees
Perhaps we should get all our products made by the Chinese
To save the world we’re armpit deep in net zero decrees
But only you can save us… can we have our ball back please

Ha! Great rhymes with none feeling forced and a hard hitting yet tongue in cheek message to boot

What you found here, Tom, is the original poem on which my song was based. If you look down page one of my poems you find the revised poem ‘Can We Have Our Ball Back Please’ with the mp3… then you’ll get my Dolly Parton reference ;-)

Really good stuff Terry. Liked the repetitive last lines as well. Gives the poem a “pleading” kind of feel. Much enjoyed. John

Dear Terry, your poem is both clever and deeply thought-provoking. You’ve captured the irony of our situation with humor, all while raising important questions about the state of the world. I love how you balance the serious with the lighthearted, definitely a unique way to make a powerful point. Keep writing! Spring Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Thank you, Daniel. This started out as an astronaut in a stricken spacecraft looking back at the little blue ball of Earth and knowing he won’t be getting back. I wrote about four lines and came to an abrupt halt. Had a quick rethink and came up with this. Glad you enjoyed. Terry

I think that ship has sailed, man continues to destroy planet earth bit by bit. And the buffoon in the WH doesn't believe in climate change. If mankind starts to reverse the damage now it will take a generation if we're lucky. Tom

Only a moron would deny climate change - it couldn’t be more apparent. I do refute the absolute certainty that it’s down to us… or that we can fix it. Stegosaurus died through global cooling; mammoths died through global warming… it’s been going on for millennia. I accept that we’re probably not helping though. Will I be buying an electric car? Will I heck as like ;-)
