Can I ask you something

Yesterday you asked me if I was coming back
The birds went silent
The wind hid behind the trees
And time stopped dead in its tracks
As you.
And everything around us awaited a response
I was nowhere near ready to give
My face held a puzzled expression as we kept walking
I forced the air out from my lungs
Unsure of the right way to say no
So I said “Maybe”
Time went back to chasing the sun
And the birds started singing again
As I whispered to the wind
“I'm never coming back”

A quietly powerful free-verse poem. The suspended natural imagery—the silenced birds, hidden wind, and waiting world—beautifully mirrors the speaker’s inner hesitation, while the final admission gives the piece a poignant sense of finality. “Maybe” becomes a small but emotionally weighty word, carrying both compassion and departure.
