This is for a contest about a body of water.  I chose the English Channel because of its historical significance, and because I admired Sir Francis Drake, Lord Horatio Nelson, and the pilots that fought in the Battle of Britain.  I remember the first time I visited London that I saw a sign soliciting charities for the old pilots that had defended Britain from the Luftwaffe.  My father is British, too.
Dover’s high
Cliffs reach towards the sky.
William the Conqueror breached the wall;
Spain, France, Germany…these waters held back them all.
Drake, Nelson, and Spitfire pilots in turns stood tall.
What do you call this battlefield trench?
The English Channel; French
Call La Manche.

Thanks. I was rather happy with this one. My half-Brit side came out.
