Brotherhood of Man

Is it possible to envision a world without warfare?
"Nothing to kill or die for."* No dangers to ensnare.
Imagine living in harmony, where no one does wrong.
There'd no longer be the need to sing Lennon's song.

Imagine a peaceful planet, whirling about in space.
Can you see yourself as part of a new human race?
Sharing everything without need for avarice or greed.
No countries or rulers, for mankind shares one creed.

Can you imagine no hunger, nor plagues bringing death?
Living among each other on Earth and taking a breath
without toxins polluting the air, and no need to pop a pill.
"I wonder if you can,"* see a world sans weapons that kill.

It's 'a brotherhood of man'* coalesced in complete unity,
Earth, an allied planet, lands filled with golden opportunity.
All totally cognizant that coexistence is worth striving for.
'Imagine,' known as a foreshadowing of what was in store.

Perhaps that Utopian way of life exists only in a dream,
But what if Lennon's lyrics did not seem to be extreme?
Would his visions of tomorrow still be called 'hyperbole?'
Til then, mortality of all earthborn remains a sad reality.

Jenna, I love your message of unity and working together to fix what is broken. I applaud you for being an "imagineer", and envisioning a world that is worth dreaming about and working towards. Lennon's words are lighthouses leading ships towards virtues worth striving for ("Give Peace a Chance", "All You Need Is Love", "Imagine", "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" and on and on). "You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one"... with this poem you prove that he was not the only one. Keep imagining, my friend.

John, thank you for another sincere response to one of my poems. The songs you mentioned crossed my mind but decided "Imagine" was strong enough to stand on its own merit. However, if used together, wouldn't their lines, infused with a poet's make a fantastic epic poem? As I replied to Greg, 'If we cannot imagine a better world, how then can we have hope of obtaining it?' I am ever so grateful that you read my poetry. Thank you.

So beautiful and sad, for I fear we can't live in Utopia, at least at this stage of our evolution. Perhaps when love exceeds greed. Congratulations on your win!

"'Image,' known as a foreshadowing of what was in store." Perhaps if we keep this dream in the forefront of our minds it will guide our actions. Wonderful use of Lennon's song. Your poem also reminds me of a song called Brotherhood of Man from How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Nicely written Jenna. Congratulations! This is a great emphasis for all the world right now.

Thanks so much, Sam. Brotherhood seems to have been waylaid by selfishness and hunger for power. I'll have to check out the song you mentioned.

"Imagine living in harmony, where no one does wrong" - Indeed, it's wonderful to imagine. Yet, for long, there are wars. Beautiful concept. Congratulations!

What a nice reference to John Lennon. If he lived a long time, his work for peace would never be finished.

He wrote such great lyrics in so many songs. This one held hope for the future, sorrowfully one he'll never see. Maybe we won't either. Thanks for the comments, Mike.

He came among us and we crucified him, he told us to follow his ways and we ignored him. Peace on earth I feel is only a dream but we live in hope. Good luck Jenna. Tom

I’m not sure such a world is attainable Jenna, I’m not even sure Lennon himself thought so, but he certainly wanted us to imagine it, just like your terrific poem does, but hey dreams are hyperbole free, great one for the contest, cheers David

It's not attainable under human rule, David. Only through divine rule is such life possible. Thanks for reading and leaving comments.
