Broken Promise
Let me stop and rest awhile,
Beneath the pine,
Beyond the bend in yonder path -
To lay my head upon your chest,
And breathe deep, your soul to mine.
Let me taste your lips so sweet ,
Before the profane,
Behind us leaps in unkind lies;
To slay my heart or steal my joy,
And bathe deep, my soul in pain.
Let me languish by your side,
Bearing sweet reprieve,
Bequeath to me; our son, a name,
To pay the promises you made,
And bring honor to our love, conceived.
