Broken Hearts
High winds driving palm leaves to the right,
pointing at broken hearts. A mother here…
a child, dear…a long hospital stay…tears.
Can it even rain on such days? Dark clouds,
dreary-gray, loathsome black - the words
are the same - “Seems strange, a dream,
can’t be, my heart is broken beyond repair.”
I pray for the forest through the trees, a glimpse
of eternity for such deep, dense, suffering.
I pray that God comforts my friends and their kin
in the peace that passes all understanding.
Lifted by those, who for a time, are above the fray,
we each sludge through the muck of life,
when curtains are drawn, and doors
are decked with wreaths of despair.
I pray and find hope. I pray, in this moment,
when I am the strong one. I wrap my arms
around my friends though they are far away.
Such tears. Such heartbreak! Jesus…!
