Breathlessly Yours

He had tried hard
She never showed interest
He would impress her
Run errands
So what if it meant
A little puffing and panting
"She takes my breath away"-
His oft heard refrain
Hope was
One day it would all pay
Come to fruition
Both together
Happy, breathless, satiated
Alas!
He never factored
The pandemic in his plans
Now, in hospital
Literally gasping
Word reaches her
She makes an appearance
Gazing from the glass window
Did he turn his head?
Did he look at her?
Did she listen?
Her eyes moist
His painful smile
His faint whisper
One last time
'Breathlessly yours'
