Blessings In Disguise

This man comes off tough.
Doesn't show much love.
But truth be told
It's all a front.

His childhood, he dares not to repeat.
He often woke alone, with nothing to eat.

He puts his hand, on his mother's shoulder.
She passed out from, an everyday hangover.

He slowly walks to his bedroom, he's hungry.
He rustles thru clothes, that are all still dirty.

He hurries to make it, to the bus stop.
No food to carry, in a school lunch box.

At school he sits down, next to another kid.
Little girl seen all the bruising.

She stared at first, he covered his arms.
It's nothing he said.
My business not yours.

When the day was over, time to go home
He just stood at the door.
Wishing he was alone.

The phone suddenly rang, it was his teacher.
His mom glared at him, then his stepdad beat him.

Next day the little girl looked for her friend.
He wasn't at school, she was worrying.

His teacher grabbed her purse, ran out the door.
To go to his house, his little body laid on the floor.

She called for help, his mom not around.
Paramedics wheeled him off, state stepped in.

A few months later, after living in foster care.
A family picked him, to live with them.

New parents turned around, said we have a surprise.
The girl from his class, then walked inside.

He asked her why, she didn't tell him before?
About adopting into her family, as her brother.

She just looked and said with a sly grin
That's my business not yours
And then tightly hugged him.
