Blank Space

When I get old
I will not remember
I will be left alone
to think
Maybe in a hospital
or in my room
I hope I will be at peace
with how I chose to live
Not as an angry person
or a sad person
but as a person with dignity
and honesty
I see it in my fathers eyes
That blank space
of what he does not remember
Is he at peace
after years of constant battles
of trying to earn money
and raise a family
I now know why he worked those long hours
and weekends
trying to catch up
while family life evaporated
It's not fair
that money stole his life
Now he is left to forget
I hope he is at peace

Charlie congrats on your poem's 1st place win in my contest! I enjoyed reading about the angst and loving hopes for peace for your father and therein for your own heart! Thanks for your entry! Blessings!
