Notes About The Poem

Birthday Dip

Brrrrr my alarm clock wakes me with a start. I open heavy eyelids to see sun streaming through a chink in the curtains. Bounding out of bed I hurriedly dress in my bikini and cover up with my shortest shorts and tightest tee-shirt. With my arthritic knees and varicose veins I am no Betty Grable, but I’m gonna prove once and for all that I can still cut it! Grabbing my surf board I head off to the local beach where my family are gathered for my 100th birthday celebrations. There is an air of anticipation as I strip down to my bikini and dip my toes into the freezing water. White spume crashes up the beach as I paddle out on my surfboard, everyone cheers as I stand and begin cresting huge waves eventually coming to rest on the damp sand. My son wraps me in a fluffy towel and hands me a steaming mug of hot chocolate. He presents me with a telegram from the Queen and a gold envelope containing a voucher for my next challenge of wing walking ...I just cannot stop smiling!

Being from the east side of Florida and surfing was my thing when I was younger I applaud the idea. Good one. I think elderly people are as young as they feel. Go for it.

Thanks Bette, I have never ever surfed as I am not keen on deep water but I applaud those who do these things at any age:-) hugs Jan xx

Lol, What a humorous take on the contest theme. If I made it to 100 I suppose I would live it up too! I wish you the best of luck in the contest:-) Alexis

Thanks Alexis I hope to live to 100 as longevity is on mum's side of the family but I will be picking up my pen and never a surfboard lol:-) hugs Jan xx

100 is only a number, Jan. Two things in life I have never done is Surf or wear a bikini. If I am fortunate enough to reach that number...I will buy a surf board and try to catch a wave in a bikini. (lol) Great entry...best wishes for a win in Caren's contest. Hugs // Charlie xx
