Bipolar Sunshine

She gets up in the morning at half past five
With a sudden electrical urge to be alive
She takes on the road with nowhere to drive
She’s summer at noon, a sun that survives

Like a bee that goes from flower to flower
Her thoughts race at a hundred miles an hour
She can’t stop moving, she’s always thinking
Even when she’s alone, she’s never shrinking

But even the sun is heavy when it never sets
It wears you down and leaves you with regrets
Every source of light, a stimulating threat
You’re tired and burnt out like a cigarette

She’s losing her glow, she’s lost in the gray
The happiness she once felt has been betrayed
Her soul’s set alight while the darkness invades
And the fire she carries just carries her away..

The two sides of bipolar…one is radiant…the other like a dark candlelight. Congrats on POTD!

This is brilliant - as someone who is bipolar - I can relate. Though I do take medication for bipolar disorder today... I remember. Oh, yes, I remember. Congrats on POTD. God bless you. A fave for sure!

The opening with "electrical urge to be alive" is strong. I feel like this captures the risky and regretful behaviour that can happen in a manic episode or hypomania. Or the early rise could be a glimmer of motivation at the end of a depressive episode. Maybe there is an element or big theme of rapid cycling, as the poem gets sadder and sadder, like a low after a high.

Many people suffer in silence, just because they aren't wearing a bandage doesn't mean that they're not suffering in some way. Congratulations to you Sophia on today's POTD honour. Tom.

An accurate depiction of what it means to live with this phenomenon, Sophia. Your strength of character shines through your writing. The way you’ve used the Sun as integral to how change in the mental realm occurs is very effective. I liked the energetic way in which poem starts, then its move into gray, with ambiguous way it ends : very similar to how bipolar acts. Salute to channelling your poetic ability in this way. ThkU for sharing. Blessings for 2026.
