On Saturday and Sunday mornings we picked wild bilberries and I made them into a pie. It's the first time I've tried bilberries and I made pastry for the first time in many years and I was delighted with the result. The remainder of the fruit is being made into bilberry vodka which should be ready for us to try by Christmas.

I've never heard of bilberries but I love the poem. Not the easiest type to write but you make it seem effortless. Love the purple lips!! Thank you for this...

Thanks Roger we have lived here for twenty years and have only discovered this little fruit recently when we went for a walk in the hills -Our friend told us to wear plastic gloves when we were picking as they really do stain everything they touch. I think you may call them huckleberries:-) Hugs jan xx

We had some more of the pie tonight Paul. this morning we went out and picked another 3 lbs (backbreaking work lol) then I prepared them for a dear friend so she can just cook with them instead of all the fiddly bits to do:-) hugs Jan xx

I rarely drink alcohol so I will have to be careful what i write if the flavoured vodka is as lovely as the pie - I can use the vodka infused fruit in a pie too!:-) hugs Jan xx

Cheers Russell its the first time I've picked bilberries and thought I would make my own pastry rather than use the one from the shop and it turned out really well. I'll make the lattice work thinner on the next pie!:-) hugs Jan xx
