Notes About The Poem

Beside the River
Through tears, my heart hears
The melancholy in his tone, his voice
Offering me the song – the fog clears
“I waited for you for forty years”
His eyes meet mine, and for the first time
I see inside, the memories so alive
Despite the truth, it felt like a crime
But I know the wonder of a light,
A light that shines through his eyes
Pouring out music, a song fading
Beneath the rhythm of our sighs
Softly playing, a sweet summer night
There we were, beside the river
Fireflies dancing in the distance
We were part of a plan from the master giver,
The One who stirred these feelings to life…
Can I ever imagine forgetting that time
When the shadows stilled, stars & the moon
We were so young, still in our prime
Passions and feelings, silencing the roar
Deafening, a wind who abides
Inside the soul who knows true love
Love that believes and never subsides
It is the place I go when I need to unwind

Why did you choose this moment?
What line was hardest to write?
What did you remove from the first draft?
~~~~
This was a moment when I felt like I knew my husband best because he was telling me that he - like me - had waited for the love story we began so many years ago, a story that had finally become a reality in our early sixties. We were meant for each other and this is a poem that speaks that clearly. The line that was hardest to write was the "statement' that had been said. I couldn't decide exactly which moment to use and this one came gently to ease my angst with this decision. I didn't remove anything. This is the first draft.
