Below the Surface

their bundle of hopes and aspirations
of dreams and share of nightmares
their dose of hardships
of injustices and bad luck
their moments of kindness

of outreach to show compassion
their bouts of disillusion
of faith in better days ahead
their courage to rise above challenges
of drive in the face of danger

i see so much of me in them
i see complex humans
trying to make it through this maze
we call life --
