Beloved Companion

Blood soaks
      Into the grain
Of the wooden cross
  Salvation sustained
       At the ultimate cost

A spear lifts
   A wet sponge
    To lips cracked
        From the heat
As the beloved companion
   Cries at his feet

The blood of Christ
   Drips from toes
        Like tears

Shed by a forgiving
     Love that endears
