Before You Fall Asleep
Where do you rest your head at night?
Is it beside hers on one pillow so you can hold her?
Does she pull the sheets away from you so that you are cold?
You were never cold beside me.
Who listens to your heart while you sleep?
Does she lie awake and listen to you breathe?
Does she rest her ear against your chest and fall asleep to your heart's lullaby?
I can still hear it sometimes in my dreams.
Do you pet her hair while she sleeps?
Do you kiss her forehead and whisper to her while she cries?
Or is she a silent sleeper, just breathing quietly beside you?
You always tangled your fingers in my hair.
What's on your mind before you fall asleep?
Is it the way she smiles when she's tried?
Is it how beautiful she is with her hair spread out across you chest?
Or is it me, and where I might be, or whether or not I am awake?
I can still hear you when you're thinking of me.
Have you heard what they say?
Have you bothered to listen when they talk about love?
Have they told you about the signs of a breaking heart?
It all comes down to the last person you think of at night.
That's where your heart is.
Where does your mind rest at night?
Is it next to her, on one pillow, so that you can hold her?
Or is it with me, where ever I might be, whether I am awake or not?
