It is said that originally haiku and tanka did rhyme. However, reading rhyme is an entirely different thought process than reading material which makes you think. Over the years poets dropped the amusing rhyme for the more intellectual comment style of writing. Is not a sin to employ the rhyme if you can maintain the complex thought process the poem is trying to project. However most writers can not do this effectively because one can only have one dominant thought at a time.
