Beannchor Looks On, Fabulous Pivoting Place
molten times, volcanising immensity, vast plateau
belly-belching landform
oceans, shallow seas and lakes swell up and down
land-bridging, submerging
any one place moving astride, stutter-shifting
continental drifting world
climate changes over faster beating rhythms
cyclic seasons weathering
life evolves, experimenting, two-legged trouble-makers
hereabouts, arriving late
Neanderthal cousins sighted, far side of inland lake
but stayed beyond the present sea
hibernian habitation, human hunter-gathering
before the ice southward creeps
fast-forward intervening beats, land and water shaping
into more familiar forms
exploratory, escaping, trading highways
seaways to the future
Beannchor looks on, fabulous pivoting place
the past echoing down to now
once important monkish learning centre, eyes on books
interbreeding Norsemen plunder
restless men of habit, joys of joyless frugal living
moving on to spread the word
Neolithic forbears, seasoning up and down the hill
polytheists and pagan celts
Christendom, much double-dealing, rival clans
power-broking, over-lording
patronage of villainous kingdoms across the water
colonised forfeit lands
old family estate on wings of many-faced town
canopy-poking memory tower
woodland, folding fields, working farms, the fringe lands
golf courses intermingling
scan over three main spires, wind turbine, swathes of buildings
wider vista to hills beyond
fortress castle, monstrous chimney, hidden salt mines
headlands, cliff-backed coast
mulls and islands, volcanic plug, the distant Isle of Man
sea of loughs, firths and channel
sandy bays punctuate slanting, rocky shore
intimate glens running down
old local harbour, cave of legend, bathing pool
scenic railway, land called ' Carnalea '
filled-in bay of boats, seafront parading further back
demolition site, stuff of dreams
next the beach of groynes, encircling period houses
windmill and river meadow
fun-day resort, funny substance drinking nights
chew-gumming pavements
some swear the aurora borealis flickering
leisure centre, detoxifying
congregations multiplying, pathways to heaven
special pleading, precious people
brave immigrants to these needful shores arriving
stirring up the fearful ones
signs of confidence waning, scorched earth pallet piling
boundary flags shouting
beleaguered para-minds strut their stuff, noisy passing by
adapting to more peaceful times
identity parade, loyal encampments on the margin
looking in, not looking out
some lift their eyes, watching trains, boats and planes
carrying the children of tomorrow
