Baskets and Carts
Baskets and Carts/Respect the Homeless 2013
By Allen Hackett
Once I had a house with lights and a bed to sleep in at night
I had food and could bath everyday!
No one believes me when I say I graduated head of my class
The luxury cars, the money, and the good times just didn't last
Now I push baskets and pull carts
People might laugh when I ask for spare change
They bark, they whisper and even growl sometimes
“Get a job...Stop bumming...Stop slumming and go to work!”
It's much more complex than you see
The secret is some of my pride has vanished due to indignities
Setbacks...delusions... illusions and downfalls have taken a toll on me
I never found the bottom of the bottle but I found crack
So I sleep in a box with a blanket full of holes
I might forget my name sometimes but I always remember my soul
I am still a man with plenty of heart but without a home
That equals more than a house that's empty within its whole
