Notes About The Poem

Written 5th December 2025

Bare of Hair

I wear a hat because I've lost my hair
Folk would laugh out loud at my head so bare
Long ago my hair was thick and wavy
It was the colour of mother's gravy.

Her gravy was dark as the lumps of coal
She would light a fire with, when it was cold
If short of cash, then us kids had to sit
In the disastrous sweaters she would knit.

Often they’d be too clingy or too large
Though knitted with love for those in her charge
Mother said if we were cosy and warm
It did not matter at all what was worn.

The years have passed by, hair has disappeared
The worst of it is, it's cold on the ears
But my mother, bless her, before she left
Knitted a draw full of hats, socks and vests.

I feel this is fiction or is it real? Losing hair is something very common these days... the pollution in air and water must be a reason. However the humorous touch of your poem has made me smile.

You are right Valsa, it is fiction, I still have my hair and I’ve been so blessed, my hair is still thick and curly, it’s no trouble at all, just wash and go. Thank you, Beryl

What an excellent composition, Beryl. How delightful that your mother has crafted a collection of hats for your drawer. My hair, delicate and sparse, finds itself troubled by the chill of the season.

Dear Beryl, what a beautiful and warm poem that links together physical change, humor, and deep family love. But what really shines is how the current reality of being "bare of hair" becomes a direct link back to mom's enduring care. It’s a wonderful way to honor her. Autumn Blessings, Dear Beryl, Daniel Keep coz

I go to oncology once every three months and I always feel sad when I see heads shaven. Such emotions. Well written.

Thank you Victor, it’s so sad to see patients lose their hair when they’ve been very ill, hopefully it’ll grow back, as mine did… Beryl

Thank you Sara, the part about hair loss is fictional. I did lose my hair when I was very ill in hospital for three months, I had a septic hip at twelve years of age. My hair grew back thicker and curly, it’s still thick but is now a whiter shade of pale… Beryl
