Bardaisan Letter to Abgar VIII
The blest letter, composed by Bardaisan
Sent by Philip, his cross carrying follower
Setting up to pass by though a young man
To Abgarus the toparch in the third hour
“Blessed are you who now believe in Christ
The Heir of the Kingdom, the Son of the Living
Though you never saw his flesh sacrificed
As it is in the Gospel of the life-giving
“Blessed are those who have not seen the light
Yet have believed the pearl shining in this dark night
Concerning your very gracious letter to me
You have not just welcomed me, a servant
But also the young maiden of wisdom in glee
A sister to you, not a maidservant
Through her grace, you will enter the fountain of joy
Which the Living Father and Queen Mother
In their union have crafted, which none can destroy
Your soul has received the invite letter
The gold and red letter from the King of kings’ hand
The letter from the Queen of the dawn-land
You will be welcomed at that great banquet
With beings divine, and will see the lamb himself
In a field that is forever sunlit
Now I will attend that earthly banquet myself
I will take with me one of my students
We will heal your affliction and pray that the vine
And pray that Christ no matter the events
Will give fruitful life to you through cherry red wine
Will grant life-filled wine to all your household
Will spread the youthful vine in your kingdom of old”
