I live within walking distance of this awesome tree. It's been a part of my and my family's lives for generations.
A 300-year-old Eastern cottonwood tree in Balmville, the Town of Newburgh — believed to be the oldest of its species in the country — was taken down by state officials on Wednesday, August 5, 2015. The state Department of Environmental Conservation removed the tree, citing its failing state and the potential hazard to passing traffic at the intersection of Balmville Road, Commonwealth Avenue and River Road in the hamlet of Balmville. “It is with deep regret and sadness that we make the decision to remove this historic and much-beloved tree that has been a historic symbol for Newburgh and the region for generations,” said Acting Commissioner Marc Gerstman in a statement. “However, the damaged tree poses a significant public safety risk that makes its removal necessary." Dated to 1699, it was more than 98 inches in diameter at breast height. In 2000, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Poughkeepsie Journal.
