Ballad of Remembrance

Are the exploits slowly fading of the folk who forged this land? Are there more important factors, today for us to understand? Are we prepared to lose our national character? Erase our borderlines, and forget about Australia, where squatter and selector, fought fire, flood and drought … the Shearer and the drover helping cut the wool clip out. Self-reliance in this dry land; suspicious of authority, physical and mental toughness, laconic humour tempered eagerly. The exploits real and fabled, our robustness could quite relate, so in our generation - old qualities are ours to celebrate, for the musterer and stockman on a cattle or sheep run. The swaggy and the bagman tramping 'neath the burning sun. The diggers and the miners. with their quest for precious ore. Bushrangers and the troopers who were the lawless and the law. The footsteps of explorers and those who died in war. Bullocks and the Walers; axe ring and crosscut saw. 'T'is for the struggle of our pioneers, and who's souls we can’t restore, that we must preserve the heritage, of Australians who have lived before.

I always loved the history of the outback so loved reading your ballad, Lindsay. I once wrote one about the battle of words between Banjo Patterson and Tom Lawson regarding the town and the bush. Must dig it out again. Fond regards. SuZ

Hello Suzanne ... thank you for your fine comment. Oh yes, Banjo and Henry certainly wrote on different lifestyles. If you happened read poems from 'John O'Brian' from his book 'Around the Boree Log'. Very Australian and very good - thank you Suzanne - Lindsay

This is a masterfully written Ballad of note, the history of Australia and its brave pioneers, who must be remembered, they are responsible for the present Australian populations claiming their heritage. 'The footsteps of explorers and those who died in war.' Well penned my friend, really informative - I love your poems as I do not know too much about Australia, although our eldest son and his fiance are immigrating to your part of the world sometime in 2021. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Thank you Jennifer ... Australia, like most countries in these modern times have lost many of our traditions with the world quickly uniting as one with technology and the cities are like most; clogged with traffic. There is still plenty of opportunities though and much to see - thank you Jennifer for your fine comment - Lindsay

Amazing, strong and wonderful words shared. "'T'is for the struggle of our pioneers, and who's souls we can’t restore, that we must preserve the heritage, of Australians who have lived before." I agree dear Lindsay. We need to remember the people, who made our world safe.

Great ballad, Lindsay... For better or for worse though, time marches on, and the old ways fade away... We see it everywhere. You know what Mrs. Prescott Bush once said: "A George Jr. in the Bush is worth two Trumps in the Sand." (Alright, ok. She said something else. I know. But that's what me walllaby said too). Cheers, Gershon

G'day Gershon ... in the US, Hollywood has given the old west a different perspective and so as kids we believed this - thank you Gershon (I'm just slipping out to feed my pet wallaby) Lindsay

G'day Tom ... we'd love to have you here Tom. If you do, head for the outback or the north; that's where Australia is really different - thanks again Tom - Lindsay
