Back Again

J ohn is back again on the same busy street corner
A nother year older, grayer, slower, sicker, shabbier
N ot poorer though; never had a penny in his pocket
U nder the worn cap, he still wears the familiar smile
A nd startles passers-by with the jarring, heartfelt song
R eminding them just how a man's luck can go wrong --
Y ou were gonna drop a few coins in his cup all along...

Though I could not place this (because the title was not January) I just wanted to let you know I like the story you tell here-

Thank you so much, Michelle... I forgot the old adage "When in doubt, read the instructions." It's a good lesson for me, as I was a little too sure that this would place in the contest. Once again, thank you for your encouragement, and thank you for helping reinforce a lesson which you'd think that I'd have learned in life by now! Warmest wishes, Gershon

Wow! This is an awesome write! The title and paired with “January”... the month we identify with fresh starts and change and he is back again... with a smile and a song! There’s such depth here! FAV

Love that you begin with his name, you see John...he is cared about by your watchful eye, you hear his song and identify with him for but a sidestep that could be you, and then your compassion causes you to contribute to his cause. Nicely done, Gershon!
